Baby Sternberg

Our principal, Mrs. Sternberg, had a baby named Emilie Christine at 9:24pm on 4/11/13.  She weighed 7lbs 5oz and was 20 inches long.  She was born at the hospital in Jasper.  There was a baby naming contest at school, and two people guessed correctly and won!  The morning they announced it, the students went wild!

The Boston Bombing

The bombing in Massachusetts was devastating to all of America.  Two bombs exploded after runners passed teh finish line.  They have found the suspects.  Three people died and over 100 were injured.  This happened in April on Patriot's Day.  Pray for our runners and viewers involved in the bombing.

The Amazing Academy Awards

Yipee!  Yipee!  Yes!  Wow!  Hi!  Mrs. Hochmeister's 4th grade class at Holy Family are doing their class Academy Awards in Fellowship Hall on Friday, April 12, 2013.  They are all very excited!

They did a video about their books.  There were 4 groups.  They are Clementine, The Secret School, Rascal, and The Enormous Egg.  All the books were good.

They are going to dress so nice that no one will recognize them!  They'll watch the videos they made.  The videos depict their book's theme.  They will also get awards for acting and more!

Pope Francis

On March 13, our newest Pope was elected!  He chose the name Francis.

Pope Francis was born on December 17.  He is 76 years old.  He was living in Argentina before he was elected Pope.  He was elected because Pope Benedict retired.  He was elected in Vatican City on March 13.  Two-thirds of the Cardinals elected him.  He is the first Latin American Pope.

Twitter

Every Monday morning, students (and teachers) in The Jungle (room 13) can make tweets to catch up on the latest scoop.  People get a laminated sheet with their name on it.  Example: @emilyp.  They write a tweet (something they want to say).  Example: Best bball team ever! :)  You only get 140 characters, so choose wisely. You can also use hashtags.  Example: #fun #bff.  You can also put an @ sign for someone's name.  Example: @madisonh.  To sum up the tweet: @emilyp: best bball game ever! :) with @madisonh #fun #bff.
#s, @'s and letters count as 1 character, so tweet away!

#classroomtweeting

In the technological age we live in, I have found that social media is an awesome way to get kids excited about learning.  Our Jungle Superstar Facebook page (see post) has proven to be a huge success this year.  The kids love posting messages to the chosen Superstar, and it also allows kids to share accomplishments, family photos, etc.

The kids (and myself) are super excited about our classroom Twitter board!  I have implemented Monday Morning Meetings in the Jungle.  MMM's are a time for the kids to share what is going on in their worlds and a time for me to give announcements, convey upcoming events, etc.

In true Twitter form, we are following the rule of 140 characters or less per tweet.  We have even started "hashtagging" our tweets.  I love getting to hear a little bit about each of my students at the beggining of each week.  Monday Morning Meetings allow the kids to share and also focus on word choice in writing.  With only being allowed to use 140 characters or less, they have to choose powerful, precise words to convey their message/thought for the day.

We shared our first tweets this morning, and I was so pleased with their efforts and messages.  Many tweeted about Spring Break, the NCAA tournament, Easter, etc.  I am looking forward to our meeting next Monday already!
